Different types of flower bulbs, tubers and rootstocks

We offer a wide range of flower bulbs, tubers and rootstocks. These include the classic summer bloomers; Dahlias, Gladioli and Lilies. But also the striking Zantedeschia, Begonias and Crocosmia.

Summer flowering bulbs for spring planting
Summer bloomers such as Dahlias, Begonias and Gladioli can be ordered online from autumn and are delivered in spring. Summer-flowering bulbs and tubers are planted in spring, after the frost and bloom in summer, sometimes well into autumn! Want to make the most of your summer-flowering bulbs? Then make sure you remove the spent flowers so that the plant has room to grow and new buds emerge.

Spring-flowering bulbs for autumn planting
Well-known spring-flowering bulbs such as Tulips, Daffodils and Hyacinths can be ordered from spring for delivery in autumn. Plant spring-flowering bulbs in autumn, before the first frost. These bulbs need the cold of winter under the ground. This is a kind of hibernation in which the flowers develop. After feeling the first warmth of spring, the bulbs awaken and grow into beautiful flowers. Spring bulbs bloom in spring. But the first spring bloomers such as Galanthus (snowdrops), Eranthis (winter akonite) and Crocus (crocuses) can shoot out of the ground even as early as January. These flowers are a delicious appetiser for bees, as they are among the first bulbs to bloom. Bees first fly out around this time to look for pollen. Want to give the bee population a helping hand? Then it is advisable to plant early spring flowering bulbs!

Naturalising bulbs
Naturalising bulbs are hardy bulbs that return and multiply every year.
The optimal growing and flowering environment for naturalising bulbs is a spot where they can be left alone. Galanthus (snowdrops) and Daffodils, for example, flower well under trees or shrubs. Naturalising bulbs such as Crocus (crocus) and Scilla (star hyacinth) also do well planted in the lawn, while botanical small tulips like a spot in the sun. Are you going to plant flower bulbs in the lawn? Then it is advisable to bear in mind that the grass should only be mowed after the naturalising bulbs have sown. That is about 6 weeks after flowering. Depending on the variety and flowering time, this means that mowing can then begin in May or June. Some naturalising bulbs are also called in Dutch 'stinzen' plants. These are a group of historical species that were planted on country estates (stinzen) in the past. Townhouse bulbs include the species Anemone nemerosa, Chionodoxa, Corydalis solida and Fritillaria meleagris.

Perennials
That perennials provide greenery in your garden is perhaps the biggest advantage. But they also add colour and structure to the garden. As ground cover or back fill in the border, perennials are the perfect addition to your garden and are often used as a base. Perennials are hardy, perennial plants. They die off above ground in winter and retreat underground for what is known as hibernation. In spring, these perennials sprout again. Under the right conditions, perennials grow richer and more beautiful every year. Do you have a shady garden or a garden where the sun shines all day? There is a suitable plant for every spot in the garden or border.

Planting and caring for flower bulbs

Unpack the bulbs and tubers as soon as they arrive and plant them as soon as possible after delivery. Still want to store them? Then keep the flower bulbs and tubers cool (12-17 degrees), dry and dark and ensure good ventilation. Do not store in the fridge or in plastic, the flower bulbs need to be able to breathe. Ensure healthy, well-drained soil. For planting instructions, we generally keep the planting distance 3x the width of the bulb and also 3x the height of the bulb. The bulbs and tubers can be planted in the soil manually. It may be useful to use a bulb planter.

Planting flower bulbs in the garden

There are many possible uses for flower bulbs. For a starker garden design, you can plant the flower bulbs in groups by colour. But a colourful collection of scents and colours can be created by mixing different varieties and colours. Mix different bulbs in a bucket and scatter them over the border. At the spot where the bulb ends up, plant the bulb in the ground. This gives a natural and playful effect! Flower bulbs are perfect for combining with perennials. Spring-flowering bulbs bring colour to the garden as soon as the perennials are above ground.

Planting flower bulbs in pots

Planting potted flower bulbs is the ultimate way to brighten up your patio or balcony. Make sure you use a large pot or basket with a hole in the bottom so that the bulbs can take root and excess water can drain away. Place hydro grains or pot shards in the bottom of the pot to ensure good drainage. Summer bloomers, such as dahlias, can be propagated by planting them in pots indoors. As soon as the risk of frost has passed, you can move the dahlias outside.
