History of the Crocosmia.

The genus name crocosmia a compound of the Greek words 'krokos' or 'saffron' and 'osme', or 'fragrance'. This name refers to the strong saffron-like scent that dried leaves give off when dipped in hot water or rubbed between your fingers. The popular name montbretia was the name of the first crocosmia hybrid, crocosmia x crocosmiiflora, a cross between crocosmia pottsii and crocosmia aurea. This hybrid was bred in France in 1879 by Victor Lemoine. The name montbretia is a tribute to the French botanist Ernest Coquebert de Montbret.
