Planting Zantedeschia tubers
With the exception of Zantedeschia aethiopica, which has a rhizome, the plants have a tuber. Zantedeschia tubers can be planted when the temperature in the ground starts to rise in spring, which is usually around the beginning of May. Plant the tubers with at least 10 centimetres of soil above the tuber, as they form roots above the tuber. You can plant them in a pot earlier, but make sure that the pot is in a warm place such as a greenhouse. The zantedeschia plant can withstand some frost, zantedeschia tubers cannot. Therefore, cover the tubers properly in winter or dig them up in autumn and store them in a cool, dry place.

History of the zantedeschia
Originally, the zantedeschia comes from South Africa. With the exception of Zantedeschia aethiopica, which has a rhizome, the plants have a tuber. In 1687, the zantedeschia was sent to the Netherlands by Governor Simon van der Stel. In 1733, Linnaeus describes the genus Calla based on plants that are now known as Zantedeschia aethiopica. He calls them Calla aethiopica. Aethiopica means in Greek 'growing in the Moorish country' or 'blackened by the sun'. In 1818, a German botanist revised the name and arrived at Richardia africana. Eight years later, in 1826, another German botanist first changed it to Richardia aethiopica and after revising the genus, finally Zantedeschia. He named it after the Italian chemist and botanist G. Zantedeschi (1773-1846). Therefore, Zantedeschia has been the official genus name for 190 years. We can also refer to the zantedeschia as a calla. This may also be due to the fact that it is called Calla lily in English. Moreover, 'calla' in Greek means: beautiful. However, there is a genus Calla that is also family of the Araceae. It is the species Calla palustris. It is a poisonous perennial that occurs in marshy places in the northern hemisphere and has rhizomes. The leaves and inflorescences are similar mainly to Zantedeschia Aethiopica. There is also the genus Richardia, which belongs to the family of Rubiaceae. These are mainly annual plants.
