Planting crocus bulbs

Crocuses are spring flowering plants, the bulbs bloom in spring and crocus bulbs can be planted from October to December. If you plant the crocus bulbs in autumn, you will enjoy the beautifully coloured flowers in early spring, sometimes even in winter. Crocuses are perfect for naturalizing and planting in your garden or lawn, and valuable for planters or pots on your patio, balcony or windowsill. Crocuses can be planted in almost any type of soil. For planting distance, consider 3x the width of the bulb, and also consider 3x the height of the bulb for planting. Crocus bulbs can be planted by hand in the soil. It may be useful to use a bulb planter.

The different types of crocus

Crocus bulbs are divided into 2 types. The small-flowered / botanical crocus and the large-flowered crocus. The many small-flowered crocus varieties are distinguished by their rich and early flowering. They are available in many colours and are very beautiful in small groups per species or in mixtures, but also in combination with, for example, snowdrops, winter aconite and chionodoxa. Backyard crocuses (tommasinianus) and snow crocuses (chrysanthus) are the most commonly planted.

Large-flowered crocuses flower strongly and richly in March and April, often at the same time as the first early tulips and blue grapes. Plant large groups of crocus en masse by species or in mixtures for best effect. These crocuses naturalise well and return for years. Popular varieties are Jeanne d'Arc (white) and Golden Yellow and Flower Record (purple).

There are also many autumn-blooming crocus varieties, but one that has captured the imagination for centuries is the crocus sativus, or true saffron crocus. It is the red pistil that is harvested to be dried into the precious saffron. To make your choice, you can use the filter; choose for example the flowering period, the colour, the group or the height.

History of the crocus

There are at least 120 different varieties of crocuses, of which about 30 are cultivated. In 1597, 11 species were described in the book 'General History of Plants gathered by John Gerard'. It is mainly native to the Balkans and Asia Minor; a few species occur in Central Europe and Central Asia. Crocus is Greek and Arabic for saffron, a reference to the Crocus sativus from which the herb saffron is obtained. The crocus has been cultivated as an ornamental plant in the Netherlands since 1550. The legend goes that Krokus, a beautiful young man from Arcadia, while throwing a discus with his Olympic friend, the god Hermes, was fatally hit by such a stone disc and that on the places where his blood fell down, purple flowers appeared: crocuses.
