Different varieties of fritillaries

We offer a wide range of fritillaries. Such as fritillaria persica, fritillaria imperialis also known as imperial crown and fritillaria meleagris. To make your choice you can use the filter; choose for example the bulb size, flowering period, colour, group or height.

Planting and caring for Fritillaria bulbs

Unpack the flower bulbs and tubers as soon as they arrive and plant them as soon as possible after delivery. Still want to store them? Then keep the flower bulbs and tubers cool (12-17 degrees), dry and dark and ensure good ventilation. Do not store in the fridge or in plastic, the flower bulbs need to be able to breathe. Ensure healthy, well-drained soil. For planting instructions, we generally keep the planting distance 3x the width of the bulb and also 3x the height of the bulb. The bulbs and tubers can be planted in the soil manually. It may be useful to use a bulb planter.

Fritillaria are spring-flowering plants, the bulbs bloom in spring and fritillary bulbs can be planted in autumn. The fritillaria does best in moist soil in a sunny spot. If you plant fritillaria bulbs in autumn, you will enjoy the beautifully coloured flowers in spring, in March, April and May. In some varieties, such as fritillaria imperialis, there is a hole in the bulb. This is where the new stem grows out. When planting, place the bulb at an angle so that no water can enter, or make sure it is surrounded by sand so that the water can drain away properly.

History of fritillaria

Fritillaria is found in Europe and North Africa, as well as in Asia and North America. The botanical name Fritillaria dates back to 1570 and comes from the Latin word 'fritillus' which stands for 'dice cup'. This refers to the shape of the flowers, and possibly to the chequered colour pattern that characterises many of the flowers. There are about 142 recognised varieties of fritillaria.
