Planting Nerine bulbs

Plant the bulbs in March or April, in well-drained soil, in a sheltered spot in the sun. The nose of the nerine bulb should protrude 2 cm above the ground after planting. Nerine bulbs also do well in a pot. The first year nerine bulbs will produce hardly any flowers, but if they are in the right place they will flower profusely the following years. The foliage then appears in the autumn and adds colour to the autumn garden.

Different types of nerines

There are different types of nerines. You have the nerine bowdenii, nerine filifolia, nerine sarniensis and nerine undulata. To make your choice you can use the filter; choose for example the flowering period, colour, group or height.

History of the nerine

The nerine was first discovered in the 18th century on Table Mountain and is therefore originally from South Africa. It belongs to the narcissus family (Amaryllidaceae), just like the daffodil and the hippeastrum. It is also known as the clipper lily. The name Nerine is thought to derive from the Greek sea nymphs Nereides. When a ship was wrecked off the coast of Guernsey and the bulbs began to bloom, they were compared to the beautiful daughters of the god of the sea 'Nerues'.
