Planting Allium bulbs
Alliums are spring and summer bloomers, the bulbs bloom in early summer when the allium bulbs are planted from October to December, before the first frost is in the ground. If you plant the allium bulbs in the fall, you will enjoy the beautifully colored flowers in the spring and early summer. Alliums grow best in sandy soil that is not too wet and generally attract insects, such as bees and butterflies. For planting distance, keep to 3x the width of the bulb, and for planting, also keep to 3x the height of the bulb. Allium bulbs can be planted in the ground by hand. It is possibly useful to use a bulb-planter.

History of the allium
Allium means "garlic" in Latin. There are also sources that say Allium comes from the Greek word 'aleo' which means avoidance (due to the smell of garlic). Linneaus first described Allium in 1753. The genus Allium includes nearly 1,000 species. This includes species that are edible, such as onion, shallot, chives and leeks. Depending on the species, the bulbs are 3 to 30 centimeters in size. The Allium oreophilum grows to only 5 centimeters in height, while the Allium giganteum can reach over a meter in height. Most species bloom in early summer, right after many spring bloomers. Originally, the allium comes from the Northern Hemisphere, Asia and the Middle East.
