Planting anemone bulbs

The Anemone coronaria is not hardy and should therefore be planted in the spring, as soon as the chance of frost has passed. To allow the anemone coronaria bulbs to root properly, it is wise to soak them in water for about 12 hours first, the hard-shelled bulbs will then suck themselves full of water. After planting it will take 8 to 10 weeks before you see the first flowers.

History of the anemone

There are about 120 species of anemones. Most species of anemones are tubers, but there are also species with rhizomes. The anemone is native to southern Europe and Asia. Around 1650 it was already widely cultivated in Europe, especially by French growers. Carolus Clusius introduced this crop to the Netherlands over 400 years ago, but other sources say that the Crusaders already brought them. The name anemones is derived from the Greek word 'anemos' meaning wind. The flowers move at the slightest breeze. Another story is that Anemona was a nymph in the court of the goddess Flora. According to the saga, Floras Zephyr, the god of wind, fell in love with Anemona whereupon the jealous goddess turned her into a flower. And then there is the story that the name Anemones originated from the Greek and Latin corruption of the Semitic name of Adonis. From his blood, the anemone species is said to have sprouted in the Middle East.
