Planting begonia tubers

Pot up the tubers in April to grow up indoors in a high humidity environment. In mid-May, the begonias can go outside as soon as the chance of night frost has passed. This makes them bloom earlier. Plant the begonia tuber with the hollow side up and cover with a thin layer of soil. The begonias thrive best in a spot in semi-shade in humus-rich, moist soil. Even though begonia tubers are less susceptible to frost than, say, the dahlia, begonia tubers cannot hibernate. Therefore, remove them from the ground after the leaves die and before frost sets in.

Different types of begonias

We offer a wide range of tuberous begonias, we offer different small- and large-flowered begonias and single- and double-flowered begonias. To make your choice you can use the filter; choose for example the flowering period, color, group or height. If you are planting begonia tubers in a pot make sure to use a large pot. A larger pot has a larger water buffer which the thirsty begonia loves.

History of the begonia

The begonia is named after French herbalist Michel Bégon, a French diplomat who was commissioned by the Sun King Louis XIV to appoint an apothecary to search for medicinal herbs for his overseas missions. This apothecary took with him the Franciscan monk Charles Plumier, who had more botanical knowledge and could also draw well. Plumier created a beautiful herbarium and made detailed drawings of plants for this purpose, which he also gave names to himself. In the process, he named botanists and patrons. In Haiti, a genus of plants was found that Plumier named after his patron Bégon, the Begonia. Ghent is an important growing area for the tuberous begonia. E. Vallerand marketed the first large-flowered begonia in 1878 under the name 'Erecta Suberba'.
