Planting instructions Iris rootstocks

The garden plants Iris Sibirica and Iris Germanica like a permanent position with a slightly acid soil. Plant the rootstocks against the surface, because if they are too deep they will not flower well. Are you looking for a dry location? Then choose Iris Germanica. Iris Sibirica prefers a moist spot, for example next to a pond.

Different types of Iris

There are Irises that grow from a flower bulb, such as Iris Hollandica (Dutch iris), Iris Reticulata (dwarf iris) and Iris Hispanica (Spanish iris). And there are Iris plants, such as Iris Germanica (bearded iris), Iris Foetisissima, Iris Ensata, iris Pseudacorus, iris Siberica (Siberian iris) and Iris Pumila. The iris comes in many different sizes, colours and shapes. Did you know that the iris comes in all colours except pure red?

History of the iris

Lis is a genus in the iris family (Iridaceae). Both the genus and the species are popularly called Iris. The name Iris comes from Greek and means 'rainbow'. The Iris was the messenger of the Goddess Hera who carried messages from heaven to earth via the rainbow and vice versa. So it is also not surprising that the goddess of the rainbow is also called Iris. But the flower Iris was already cultivated in Greece and Egypt 4,000 years ago. In the 12th century, Louis the Seventh had it put the Iris in his arms, according to him it brought good luck. Because when he was trapped with his army and had to cross by the river Lys, he saw an Iris Pseudacorus (yellow lis) on the other side, that's where he crossed. The French lily was called this sign. So the sign is not a lily but an iris!
