Planting peonies (bare roots)

Peonies like moist and nutrient-rich soil and a spot in full sun. Do not plant the bare roots of the peony too deep, as this may cause the plant to flower poorly. The nose of the plant only needs to be 1-2 centimetres below ground level. You can plant peonies in autumn or spring, as peonies are hardy. You can keep in mind that peonies do not produce many flowers in the first year. If planted in autumn, the bare roots have more time to make roots and the plant will give more flowers. The second year they flower well. After 6 to 10 years, peony plants can be lifted. You can then split the peony plants and replant them in another place

Different varieties of peonies

We offer a wide range of peonies. There are many paeonia varieties, mostly red, white or pink in colour, almost all of which fall under the paeonia Lactiflora group. Such as paeonia 'Duchesse de Nemours' or paeonia 'Sarah Bernhardt'. We also sell Itoh peonies, these are strong hybrids between tree and herbaceous species and these Itoh peonies do well in humus-rich greens in a light spot. To make your choice you can use the filter; choose for instance flowering period, colour, group or height.

History of the peony

Paeonia is a genus in the family Paeoniaceae. The botanical name Paeonia dates back to ancient times. Paieon was the god of healing in ancient Greece. Peonies were originally grown to be used as medicine. The roots of this 'herb' were used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat many different ailments.
