Planting freesia tubers

The freesia is a tuberous plant. After planting, one or more new shoots grow from the tuber, which initially split off leaves. Freesia tubers can be planted after frost preferably in airy, well-drained soil. Freesia tubers love sunshine, plant freesias in a sunny spot. If properly covered, freesias are reasonably hardy. You can also dig up the bulbs after the first night frost and let them hibernate frost-free. Freesias do well in a pot, in the ground they look best when planted in groups.

Different kinds of Freesias

We offer different kinds of freesias. To make your choice you can use the filter; choose for example the flowering period, color, group or height. A distinction is made between single flowered and double flowered. Freesia tubers can be beautifully combined with other flower bulbs and plants.

History of the Freesia

The freesia belongs to the Iridaceae family, just like the Iris and the Gladiolus. The freesia is native to South Africa. The freesia got its name around 1830 from the botanist Ecklon, a collector of plants in South Africa, who named the crop after the German physician Freese. The first cultivation activities were started in various European countries at the end of the 19th century and continued throughout the first half of the 20th century.
