Planting dahlia tubers

Dahlias are summer bloomers, so you should plant them in the spring. Do wait until the last frost has passed. Dahlia tubers are full of water and therefore freeze quickly, which kills the dahlia. You can also propagate the dahlias by planting the tubers in a pot in March. Place the pot in a warm spot such as a greenhouse, windowsill or conservatory. As soon as the chance of night frost has passed you can plant the tubers from the pot in the garden. Pre-planted dahlias do not flower earlier, because a dahlia will always continue to flower until the first night frost or until the weather becomes too cold. As soon as the leaves have finished flowering and yellowed you can dig up the dahlias to store the tubers until next spring. Dahlias like a humus-rich soil, especially in hot, dry summers it is important to keep the soil well-drained and moist. Dahlias are ideal for picking and look stunning in a bouquet.

Different types of dahlias

We offer a wide range of dahlias in various colours and shapes. There are cactus dahlias with pointed petals, lush decorative dahlias, huge dinner plate dahlias or the striking pompom dahlias. To make your choice you can use the filter; choose for example the flowering period, colour, group or height.

History of the dahlia

The history of the dahlia goes back five centuries. The dahlia was discovered by Spanish explorers among the Aztecs in New Spain, now Mexico. The flower was described by a Spanish naturalist and physician, Fransisco Hernández de Toledo, who was in the service of the Spanish king. He studied botany and medicine and was one of the first scientists to visit the New World in search of medicinal plants. Only much later, in 1789, were seeds of the dahlia sent to the director of the Royal Garden in Madrid. The seeds germinated and plants grew with different coloured flowers. The dahlia was introduced into the Netherlands in 1810. Grower C. Arentz from Leiden was one of the pioneers. In 1819, this grower offered a range of around 70 varieties (colours). In 1813 he succeeded in growing, as one of the first, a filled flowered dahlia.
