Planting hydrangea

It is best to plant garden hydrangeas in the spring. In spring the plants grow more easily. Although spring is the ideal time to plant a hydrangea, the late summer is also a good time to plant hydrangea in the garden. The soil is still quite warm then. A moderately warm and shady spot will do best for a garden hydrangea. It is better not to plant it near a tree because tree roots are dominant and this is at the expense of the hydrangea's nutrition. Put the hydrangea, including the pot, in a bowl of water for a while before planting so that the roots can absorb the water. Then place the hydrangea in a large hole, fill with potting compost and water well. If your garden consists of clay soil, mix it with some peat moss or use acidic port soil.

Different hydrangea varieties

We offer a special selection of hydrangeas in pots. Various richly flowering varieties, each with its own deep colour. To make your choice, use the filter; choose for example flowering period, colour, group or height.

History of the hydrangea

Hydrangeas originally come from Japan and China. The scientific name of the plant was first recorded in 1753, when the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus published the name of the genus Hydrangea in his Species Plantarum. 'Hydra' is derived from hydôr and means water. 'Angea' is derived from angeion and means jar.
